How much self-leveling compound do you need? Calculate in 3 steps

Too little self-leveling compound is frustrating (and takes time), but buying too much is also a waste. Fortunately, you can easily calculate the required amount with a single formula. In this article, we explain it step by step, including practical calculation examples and common mistakes. Prefer to calculate it directly? Use our Self-Leveling Compound Calculator.

Step 1: Measure your floor area (m²)

Measure the length × width of the room and convert it to m². Does your room have an L-shape or multiple corners? Then divide the floor into rectangles, calculate the m² for each part, and add everything together.

Step 2: Determine the layer thickness (mm)

The layer thickness is the average number of millimeters you want to level. Measure the highest and lowest points (for example, with a long straightedge/laser) and determine a realistic average thickness. If you are working with multiple “zones” (e.g., 2 mm in one corner and 5 mm in another)? Then calculate each zone separately and add up the results.

Step 3: Use the formula (m² × mm × consumption)

Formula:
Required kg of self-leveling compound = floor area (m²) × layer thickness (mm) × consumption (kg/m² per mm)

For many self-leveling compounds, consumption is around ~1.5 kg/m² per mm, but this varies per product. Therefore, always check the product sheet or specifications of your self-leveling compound.

Example 1 (Hammerfast SL-110 FIBER – 20 kg bag)

The Hammerfast SL-110 FIBER has a stated consumption of 1.6 kg/m² per mm and is supplied in 20 kg bags.

  • Area: 20 m²
  • Layer thickness: 3 mm
  • Consumption: 1.6 kg/m²/mm

Calculation: 20 × 3 × 1.6 = 96 kg
Number of bags (20 kg): 96 / 20 = 4.8 → 5 bags

Example 2 (general indication with 25 kg bags)

  • Area: 40 m²
  • Layer thickness: 2 mm
  • Consumption: 1.5 kg/m²/mm

Calculation: 40 × 2 × 1.5 = 120 kg
Number of bags (25 kg): 120 / 25 = 4.8 → 5 bags

Always smart: calculate 10–15% extra margin

In practice, you often need a little extra (small irregularities, spillage, absorption, leveling "just a little thicker"). Therefore, preferably calculate a 10–15% margin, especially for larger areas.

What value do you enter for 'consumption'?

Our Self-Leveling Compound Calculator allows you to enter the consumption yourself, so you can always calculate with the correct product specification.

Tip: Are you using Hammerfast SL-110 FIBER? Then you can assume 1.6 kg/m² per mm (according to product specification).

Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)

  • Entering consumption "by feel": always check the product specification or technical sheet.
  • Too little margin: it's better to order a little extra than to run out halfway through.
  • Incorrect layer thickness: measure height differences in advance (and calculate per zone for large variations).
  • Substrate not properly prepared: dust-free, stable, and with the correct primer/pre-coat for your situation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much self-leveling compound I need?

Use the formula: m² × mm × consumption (kg/m² per mm). Consumption is usually found in the product specifications or on the product sheet.

What is a "normal" consumption per m² per mm?

Many products are around ~1.5 kg/m² per mm as a rule of thumb, but this varies per self-leveling compound. For Hammerfast, always calculate with the product data (e.g., SL-110 FIBER: 1.6 kg/m² per mm).

How much extra self-leveling compound should I order?

Generally, calculate 10–15% extra to account for minor deviations, spillage, and additional leveling.

What if my floor needs different thicknesses?

Divide the space into zones with their own thickness (mm), calculate each zone separately, and add everything together. This prevents you from ordering too much (or too little).

How do I calculate the number of bags?

Divide the total kilograms by the bag weight (e.g., 20 or 25 kg) and always round up.

Can I calculate this faster?

Yes, use the Hammerfast Self-Leveling Compound Calculator. There you enter m², mm, consumption, and bag weight, and you get the result directly.
