1) What types of tile adhesives are there?

In Europe, tile adhesives are usually designated according to EN 12004. The letter indicates the "type of adhesive":

3) The most important properties of tile adhesive (and why they matter)

Adhesive strength (class 1 vs 2)

The higher the requirements (large format, porcelain, outdoors, underfloor heating), the more important an improved adhesive (…2) becomes. This reduces the risk of hollow spots, loose tiles, and crack formation.

Open time & adjustment time

Open time is the period during which you can still safely lay the tile into the combed adhesive. In practice, open time is mainly influenced by: temperature, wind, suction of the substrate, and how much adhesive you comb "ahead." Tip: comb less m² at a time and check the adhesive film (don't let "skins" form).

Slip (T)

Working on walls or with heavy tiles? Then T is your friend: less sagging, more precise work, and fewer corrections during placement.

Flexibility / deformability (S1/S2)

For substrates that experience movement (underfloor heating, outdoors, panel materials, old tile-on-tile situations), a deformable adhesive helps to absorb stresses. This means: less chance of cracks or detachment due to expansion/contraction.

Water and frost resistance

For outdoors, wet areas, or large temperature changes, you'll want an adhesive explicitly designed for that purpose (and always combine this with the correct system build-up/waterproofing where necessary).

5) Application tips: how to get the best performance from your adhesive

  • Substrate flat, firm, and dust-free: remove loose parts, grease/soap residues.
  • Primer where necessary: absorbent → Astar V, smooth/non-absorbent → Astar F.
  • Correct trowel/notching: larger format = larger notching; goal is sufficient adhesive contact.
  • Buttering-floating for large format: adhesive on the floor AND thinly on the back of the tile for maximum coverage.
  • Monitor open time: don't comb "too much" ahead; check that the adhesive isn't skinning over.
  • Grout at the right time: follow product sheet (e.g., Seramix Flex: groutable after approx. 24 hours).
  • Finish expansion joints correctly: stresses belong in joints/expansion joints, not in the tile.

6) Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)

  • Wrong adhesive class: large format/porcelain on "too light" adhesive → choose C2 instead.
  • No primer on critical substrate: leads to poor adhesion or too rapid suction.
  • Skinning of the adhesive: too many m² combed or worked in too warm/dry conditions → work in smaller sections.

What is the difference between C1 and C2 tile adhesive?
